Welcome back to Unveiling Layers. Our spotlight turns to Toronto, where the captivating Caterina Fontana shares her journey, insights, and inspirations.
How did you get into the industry and what does your journey look like so far?
I started in the industry over 10 years ago in a setting that was not the most positive, to say the least. Without getting into details, I began in a less-than-ideal environment; it was dangerous, boundaries were crossed and I didn’t have a voice.
What it taught me was resilience, self advocacy and the importance of doing things in alignment with who I am. Starting where I did, that foundation, has been a huge part of my growth.
Every step since has been intentional and I’m proud of the growth my journey reflects.
Today, my journey looks completely different. I’ve built a career that reflects my values, one rooted in warmth, connection and authenticity. I have the privilege of meeting incredible people, curating experiences that bring joy to both of us and running things on my own terms. What began as a difficult start has transformed into a path that feels both fulfilling and empowering.
Do you find that there is a type of client who seeks you out, who you really enjoy seeing?
The type of client that seeks me out is typically a person who has their head on straight. And I mean it! Reading my website, filling out my booking form, screening as per the instructions and sending a gift prior to our date. I truly see the best of the best clients. I am so grateful for what this career has brought to me.
Besides screening and sending deposit on time, in terms of who I enjoy seeing, I love a generous, thoughtful and caring person. Someone who likes a bit of banter, who enjoys a discussion about politics, life’s challenges, psychology, you name it! I think it’s healthy in all relationships to have a bit of a give and take and debating in a good natured way is the way to my heart. I also adore pre-boudoir flirtation. Think candlelit dinner, close quarters, his hand on my leg, whispering sweet nothings. So much fun!

What do you love most about your work? And is there anything you find especially challenging?
What I love most about my work is the people. Every encounter is a chance to step into someone else’s world, to learn from their experiences and to share a moment in time that’s entirely our own. I meet people from all walks of life and I find it endlessly fascinating how different our stories can be, yet how deeply connected we all are by the same need for closeness, understanding and intimacy.
I especially love the conversations that build. The ones that start light but drift into deeper waters— about psychology, politics, art, relationships, or simply what makes life worth living. I find that when people feel safe enough to open up, the connection becomes so much richer. These are the moments, whether we’re laughing, reflecting, or simply enjoying the quiet comfort of each other’s company, that I feel most grateful for what I do. Intimacy, in every sense of the word, is at the heart of my work and it’s what keeps me inspired.
I’d say the most difficult and challenging part is navigating the online world. Social media has become such an integral tool for visibility, yet it also comes with a certain weight. I’m constantly reflecting on how much of myself to share, what to keep private and how to present my life in a way that feels true but also protected. Finding that balance between authenticity and boundaries is something I’m still learning, but it’s a challenge I welcome because ultimately, it allows me to continue showing up wholeheartedly for the people I meet.
What are your hobbies outside of work? What do you do to pass the time?
I just picked up a new hobby actually! Punch needling. I find it keeps me calm, focused and in the present moment, much like meditation, which I practice daily, along with breath work and mindfulness practice. On a typical day, I’ll do these in the morning, walk my puppy girl, do my workout, some admin, spend time outdoors (I’m a summer girl through and through). If I have a date that day, you know how much time getting ready entails hehe. I also love going for massages, getting facials, going to the spa in general!, shopping and spending time with family and friends. Family is so important to me, so I make a huge effort to see mine every day.
Do you like to tour? Any favorite cities or experiences?
I do! I recently just got back from Washington, DC. It was actually a FMTY. But it was amazing. I’m planning an upcoming London, UK and Istanbul tour in November. I’d say Toronto is my favourite city to tour. I’m there every month! It’s kind of like my second home.

What role does social media play in your work?
Social media is huge. You need to have it, but it can be very difficult to navigate the whole ’what do I post’, and ‘what do they want to see’ aspect. As an in person sw, I wish we didn’t need social media to advertise ourselves because we have ad sites for that. But the way things are trending, people want more from you. They want the parasocial relationship, and it can get exhausting. I just try to stay positive so I’m not overwhelmed or stressed (although this happens from time to time).
Also, I will note, that at a time with so much going on in the world (civil unrest, genocides, Zionist settler colonization, ongoing oppression, displacement, colonialism, mass deportations, police brutality, etc.), you want to speak your mind, but you fear getting deplatformed. It’s something I struggle with every day.
Is there a book, blog, TV show, or movie that has had a major impact on your life? What was it and what did it teach you?
Lola Davina’s Theiving in Sex Work was an excellent read and helped me navigate some of the intricacies of the industry. But, I would say my biggest teachers have been my peers. This community is so supportive, so amazing and so helpful. I’ve met some of my best friends in the community and we always are there to swap advice, support each other and make sure we’re safe. I’ll just share a tiny tidbit, but when I was in the hospital 4 years ago, I truly didn’t think I was going to make it, mentally or physically. Before that, I hadn’t emerged myself into the community. But I took a chance and did at that point. Best decision I ever made. It got me through the most painful period of my life. The community literally saved me.
You live in Toronto. What do you love about it?
I actually live in Ottawa! I do travel to Toronto 1-2x/ month so I consider it a second home! I love both cities, but Toronto keeps me coming back because of the quality of clients (I love my regulars), the lively neighbourhoods, amazing food and a certain puppy girl who has stolen my heart (shoutout to Hanna).
